Doing our bit
Being eco-minded and protecting this beautiful patch of beach is at the heart of everything we do at the Hut. We know we’re not perfect, but we are trying in every way we can and are always looking for new ideas to better our approach…
Off the grid
sun worshipping
Did you know we are off the grid? Solar panels on the roof power everything from our grinders to the till. Our trusty coffee machine is gas powered and we carry in all the water we need everyday, so we never waste a drop. We also collect rain water to wash the bikes and for our thirsty plants (they also love to drink the grey water from the coffee machine and the coffee grounds keep those pesky slugs at bay).
Disposable cups…
…it’s complicated
All our cups, lids and food packaging is biodegradable wherever possible. We experimented with compostable cups, but feel until the infrastructure for industrial composting improves, biodegradable is the way to go. But we are constantly evolving and researching. Like bringing your own carrier bag to the supermarket, we also feel it would be great if more people brought their own cups - so we knock 10p off your drink if you remember yours and regulars can now store mugs on our shelf.
Beach cleans
leaving no trace
Our staff carry out beach cleans daily to ensure all rubbish (not just ours - but everything that gets blown or washed up here) gets disposed of or recycled. We also have a litter picker station with baskets and pickers for the public to use in case they spot anything unnatural on the beach.
Hut 55 is also proud to support Plastic Free Deal and the Deal With It community beach clean campaign by providing free hot drinks to volunteers on their annual sweep of the area.
Food that’s meant to be
eaten
supporting local charities
We hate waste so work with Deal Food Bank to ensure unsold food gets taken to local families in need at the end of the day.
Feel free to chat to us about any of this or if you have suggestions for how we can do better - we are all ears…
